To my knowledge, nobody ever did, but it doesn't seem all that important, as it is most likely a stock photo anyways. If we were supposed to have decoded it, I think we would have been told to by now.

Does anyone know what language it is? One of my students is a Japanese exchange student, but I'm embarrassed to say I don't know if that is Japanese or not...

I've already posted what this means a few days back...its a kanji symbol, it literally means "writing brush"....if you right click to save the pic, ull notice its name is "writing"...wongo isnt lying...thats exactly what it means, altho the word brush is missing, but it doesnt generally have to have brush at the end, it can be used both ways.
