The red dots on the squares themselves were really hard for me to see -- thanks, tipsila, for getting it through my thick head -- so I enhanced the brightness of the dots and did a 200% blowup so that it's easier to see.

I treated this as a simple substitution cipher. I gave each unique square a letter from the alphabet, starting with the top left square, moving to the right; then down one row, back to the left.

After assigning a letter to each square, I copied the letters in the same order as I had assigned them, and ran it through a code solver. I tried different orders of the letters (top row left to right; second row right to left, etc.), and some results show many words, but are nonsense.

Then I tried another way.

From the bottom left corner up, then back down to the bottom - middle row up, and right bottom corner up. The letters read: MBIBCGIFDANKBDHDABBOLJHIFEEC.

After the code breaker, the result read: mereswithavetotheendforills

meres with ave to the end for ills.

Meres - In the bible, counselor of King Ahasuerus; a small lake, pond, or marsh; a boundry... or in French, MOTHERS!

ave - Latin used by the Romans as a greeting or salutation meaning 'hail', 'be well' or 'farewell'.

Not sure if it means anything. I'll keep working on it.

I find it interesting that not only does 'meres" mean mother in French. But anagrammed you get the word "mother" as well, along with "Eve" the first mother.

Anagram anyone?

I'm thinking Vigenere Cipher with the picture being the key. I have tried birth as the key with all the codes given to us. I've also tried the boxes reading from left to right and form top to bottom. Giving nothing. Could the artist or the painting be the key? Will try later if nobody follows up.

the spaces in my "code" were just to indicate the rows, they weren't intended to have meaning, sorry.
