There is an interesting parallel that emerges immediately between Charles XII and Maxwell, that being that near the end of his life Charles was placed under house arrest in Istanbul. He escaped but died attempting to rebuild his kingdom.

That aside, the obvious answer to this joke is to make it a dig at ol' Charles (any other king would call that fool the second making the first one Charles XII, or some variation on that model), but I think that's too obvious.

EDIT: whoops, didn't notice that somebody had already quoted.

cards?

This might be off-the-wall, but could this have something to do with cards. A fool is used in tarot decks and is usually given a value of zero.

update on Who is Max?

Quote:
I just checked Max's "lost page" and something had changed. The countdown was gone and the picture had a link attached to it. It leads to a sound file: "introductions.mp3"

A voice introduces himself as Maxwell B Prescott. He claims to be a captive in his own home and needs help. I'm really not sure if he addresses me alone, he doesn't use my name but just calls me his friend. I'm not his friend! I don't even know the guy!

He ends his message with a riddle and says it is a very difficult 'conundrum'

If there was one fool in the court of king Charles the twelfth
What number would he receive from any other king?

Maxwell also mentioned some research should be done. I checked wikipedia for Charles XII and apparently he was a king of Sweden; and, what's even more interesting, exactly the same picture as on the lost page is on the wikipedia site.

I guess I'm looking for some number, but I don't understand the fool or court parts… they probably mean or point at something else.

I'll just keep looking for more info or clues on that wiki site for now…

3073 and different page

From a comment made by stonej on vjails blog ( http://vjails.blogspot.com/2007/06/introductions.html ) , I figured the answer might be 3073.
When I went to http://www.maxprescott.com/3073/ I figured it didn't work, because I got Page not found, but with different text than the other Page not found pages.
In black on black,

"This might indeed be an answer to a riddle.
However, still not all of the answers
lie were they seem.
The internet is vast. "

I'm guessing that we got the 3073 part correct.

From the hidden message at /3073/:

I think this might mean we need to find another (new) website, related to "court" somehow.

Not at all, this is only the 2nd or third puzzle (depending how you count). And we've been stuck here for a few days Bang Head New insights would be appreciated Smile

Also to possibly get some ideas flowing (I'm out of them)
Charles XII is also the name of a racehorse and Pub in england.
I'm thinking that the riddle might have to do with either of those. (something to do with a drunk person perhaps). Just an idea

I tried the phone numbers of the bar in octal and the regular number on the main page.

Maybe I'll try those numbers as their own website. Nope no luck

There is a new post on Vjail's blog.

http://vjails.blogspot.com/2007/06/what-to-do-with-3073.html

Quote:

A small update.
Stonej and f found that fool stands for 6001 in the octal numeral base and that would make it 3073 in decimal. I think that's the correct answer to the king Charles riddle, because when you open that page, /3073 there is a different page not found message than before.

This might indeed be an answer to a riddle.
However, still not all of the answers
lie were they seem.
The internet is vast.

This doesn't look like some new riddle but a pointer as where to use that number we found. Something else I found is that if you look at the properties of the picture, it is named "database"
It probably is another clue but I really can't think of anything it has to do with the riddle itself…

I'll let you know if I have any ideas about what to do with the number 3073

Wiki says about King Charles XII

Apart from being a monarch, the King's interests included mathematics,
and anything that would be beneficial to his warlike purposes. He is attributed as having invented an octal numeral system, which he considered more suitable for war purposes because all the boxes used for materials such as gunpowder were cubic. According to a report by contemporary scientist Emanuel Swedenborg, the King had sketched down a model of his thought on a piece of paper and handed it to him at their meeting in Lund in 1716. The paper was reportedly still in existence a hundred years later, but has since been lost.

under Emanuel Swedenborg

In contrast, one of the most prominent Swedish authors of Swedenborg's day, Johan Henrik Kellgren, called Swedenborg "nothing but a fool"

Might have something to do with the riddle about the fool since the answer vjails posted 3073 had to do with the octal number system and the page we got the riddle on was called lost.

So I Googled "Swedenborg" and "database" and got this:

http://www.lingfil.uu.se/swedenborg/

as the first result. There are a whole lot of sites related to Swedenborg, as well, but none of them appeared to be related in any way.

Hi there. New here, but interested in this game.

I googled 3073 swedenborg and got this site:

http://www.sacred-texts.com/swd/sd/sd32.htm

and the verse for 3073 is:

Several times it was granted me to be present with those who spoke; and it appeared to me that I led them, and they did not know it; afterwards they observed it; hence may be known how one leads another, and speaks with another, and nothing else is perceived than that he speaks in whom is the thought and attention. - 1748, September 6.
