[NOT SOLVED?] Odd noises in the bee sound files

I wasn't certain what this would be labeled as ([SPEC]?), so a mod can edit this as they please to label it correctly (or delete it if it's useless, or move it if it's in the wrong place.)

I downloaded the bees1.wav file from the ilovebees.com site and tried to do some things with it. When reversing the sound, I thought I could hear some sort of music (though it could just be from reversing the sound). Can anyone good with music editing follow this up and see if I'm just hearing things?

edit label to reflect ongoing discussion - AD

In #beekeepers, zeal mentioned that he/she is working on manipulating the wavs, I believe.

Zeal, can you give us more info?

Just a quick note

Was mentioned in another thread the the "queen piping" wav was a slowed down seagull.

I did some research and found out that that is not a slowed seagull, that is actually a noise that a queen bee will make. Specifically when she is trapped in a cell in a hive and is calling for worker bees to protect her from any other "queens" in the hive.

I've split the wavs into five seperate audio channels and I have a few people helping me analyze them. As for the bees comment, that is highly interesting. Although I can't confirm anything as of yet, I'm using various professional level audio software to pick it apart. I'm also looking for possible encrypted information. I'll keep you updated.

If you play the queen bee file reversed, it seems like someone laughing....

when you view the bees1.wav in a spectrum analyzer, it looks like there were some letters and numbers in there, I think I can make out "P925", although of course it might be entirely coincidental or just me beginning to see things.

I think hollow1's interpretation of this sound is misleading.

It's a queen bee piping all right,
but the queen is not crying Help!,
she's saying I'm Getting Ready To Kill You All!

This kind of piping is apparently called 'tooting',
which according to beesource.com
http://www.beesource.com/pov/wenner/sci1964.htm

Quote:
is the regal identification of a virgin queen soon after she has emerged from the cell in which she developed

...
Quote:
Once this queen has emerged, has hardened and has become steady on her legs, she proceeds to visit other queen cells, tear them open and sting to death their potential but not yet mature queens.

I ran it through an audio filter...

I think I was able to filter out the buzzing. I ran a noise reduction filter, and it took out most of the buzzing and left the "chirping sound that I seem to hear in the background.

try slowing this down to about 1/4 speed.... almost sounds musical.

However, my guess is that I'm spinning my wheels and that the chirping/whistling is not the good stuff. It sounds like there's something masked in lower frequencies, the drone buzzing sound as opposed to the chirps. Anybody have any luck?

I also ran the original file through a text editor but nothing stood out.

Try playing it at 2.5x the normal speed.

eh... I'm not sure

"Help me. Please, someone (try to help me?)"

I dunno... the more I play it (the filtered file) the more I think that I'm going the wrong direction. When I speed up the original... the result is inconclusive. Not to say that there isn't something there, just nothing I can make out.

I'm certain there's something in the sound files if for no other reason than it seems there's secrets embedded in the other media (the html, the javascript, even the images). We need a sound guru.

I'm wondering if some form of steganography has been applied to the WAV files, wherein subtle changes are made to an audio or image file to store data in less-than-obvious ways. The subtle warbling/digitized effect in these sounds could theoretically be the result of these changes.

I've tried opening the WAV files in S-Tools but they weren't recognizable as WAV format. Perhaps this is more telling than not.

I still can't discern what, if anything, is being said. It *is* unusual though.

regarding stenography and s-tools. there could be a steg in there, but the fact that the app didn't recognize the format is not especially telling -- wav files can be encoded with a variety of codecs and my guess is that stools just doesn't recognize it.
