[PRESS] Wired Magazine 16:01The new world of immersive games

I know theBruce posted this in the Year Zero section, but I think the article discusses more than Year Zero. So I am posting it here for reference and for people who might miss it in the Year Zero archives. I think people who didn't play Year Zero might enjoy Frank Rose's take on ARGs.

The New World of Immersive Games

and a very lengthy interview with Trent

Trent interview on ARGs

Yeah, xnbomb already posted that to the press forum here.

Sorry. I guess I don't know when to put something in the general thread or when to make a new topic. :/

I guess either's fine, both might be overkill Wink

I'm having trouble getting to the "hidden parts" of the article.

I thought

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Reznor had stepped into a new kind of interactive fiction: one where players don't just consume the story.

But it won't accept...

Be careful with capital letters and punctuation. And you cannot make a mistake and overwrite - you have to start over from scratch. But you missed an entire word.

Here in the NiN YZ thread I posted the solves.

Really great article, thanks for cross-posting here. I wouldn't have seen it otherwise.

It seems like the reporter really "gets it." Smile

I should hope so -- the author did two separate phone interviews with me, each going for more than an hour. Thanks for the mention, Frank. Confused

Heh. Not only did he do two interviews with me too (strangely, very little of it about Audi) but I also see at least one of the people I referred him to got a meaty quote. At the time, he even said he didn't have an angle for the story. Rolling Eyes Next time, Frank gets my PR agent instead of my Rolodex Wink

Hey, I had a long lunch with him at Craftworks talking about ARGs. (thanks again for the great lunch, Frank. ) As you might expect, I did most of the talking. After that lunch he was headed to London to to interviews with Adrian Hon and Micheal Smith. My feeling is that he did a great deal of background research. I think the list of people he interviewed is extensive.

I'm pretty sure he choose to focus on a specific game to explain ARGs as otherwise his article just gets too general. I think he decided not to do Eldritch Errors because the article was coming out so long after Halloween and not to do Perplex City because it is over and Mind Candy is moving in a totally different direction.

And, of course, Trent Reznor attracts attention from people who aren't familiar with the genre. It is nice that the article includes someone fairly famous who isn't considered a geek (sorry I think JJ Abrams is solidly geeky.) ARGs are an exciting genre to plenty of people who aren't simply science fiction or internet nerds. Even though WIRED appeals to that audience, the article clearly shows a diversity of players.

I'm so happy that he chose a game that had depth and complexity of story and design, and an impresive live event. I wasn't a fan of dystopian and depressing existence of Year Zero, but I appreciated many elements of the game. If he had gone with something like the terrible "The Lost Experience" promotion, he would have missed showing what an amazing immersive experience ARGs can be for the players.

I'm so happy he did such a great job on this.
