"We've been raised to believe viral marketing is cannon." Drew Goddard was interviewed for about an hour about everything Cloverfield. I mean, he approaches everything - including viral marketing, the titles, the story, the bloodier version, the original ending, his writing style, why he doesn't like the viral marketing, how Tagruato has nothing to do with the film we see, and the satelitte that fell from the sky.

Wonderful interview.

It's a quote from Drew in that interview. He doesn't believe the marketing has any bearing over the film at all.

Which is ideally true.
I mean... we saw it ourselves, almost nothing from the ARG/ARE was in the actual movie
*edit*
Can we get a transcript or something?

LOL... so that whole idea that it was named after the street isn't true then? sweet.
and to add to that:

Also, Clover isn't a baby then? lol...
and what's more- Matt and Drew both wanted it to be an "R" rated movie.
the line that J.J. Hawkins says right before the 'earthquake' was suppose to be "you need to say 'fuck' the world, and hold onto the people you love." buuuut they changed it... figures.
down sides: No one's talked to Drew about a sequel yet...

Wait...so the whole "a baby/it's been under the water for thousands and thousands of years" thing is a lie?
WTF, man.

Not exactly.
Drew is of the opinion if it wasn't on screen in the movie, it's not canon.
He didn't write the 'It's a baby" thing into the script.
It's probably how the director (who supplied that quote) was veiwing/directing how the monster acted/reacted. It's the directors point of behavior reference, not neccesarily the actual reality.
Yes thats alot of maybe in that sentence.
Drew was decidedly... vague. Both on that and anything regarding the Arg. While it could be argued he said the whole ARG is non-canon (he didn't) He did say what counts is what is on screen.
And despite people saying nothing of the ARG was in the movie, thats definitely not so.
Direct calls back to the ARG in the film: Was in film (What it calls to)
===========================================
Rob was headed to Japan to be a VP of marketing. (myspace)
The party (first steps to its organizing were in the myspace pages)
Rob visiting Beth overnight a month before the attack. (Myspace)
Tagruato (Logo on tanker)
Jamie passed out on couch (call back to her video blogs)
Object fell from sky a month before attack (Object tracked by tag satellite as it fell - Tagruato)
HUD as comic geek (myspace again)
[technically, the basic personality of most the characters were in the film and call back to thier myspace, except maybe Jaime.. but then, passed out at a party may by right in line personality wise anyway...]
Tentative indirect call backs:
Military showed up quicker than expected in film (Pictures on 1-18-08 and Chuai news videos show they were forwarned of something)
Jamie passed out on couch (effects of DSI via her blogs)
Rob was headed to Japan to be a VP of marketing. (slusho/tagruato)
Object fell from sky a month before attack (Any number of theories of what Tag recovered)
I'm sure I could come up w/ more especially indirect ones.

That interview is nothing but a 24 minute rant about LOST. There isn't even a mention about Cloverfield.

The interview is like 55 minutes long, finish the part about Lost or skip it.

Haha I loved the Cloverfield stuff. I only wish he knew more about the viral marketing.
Oh yeah...
Quote:
Interviewer: "Is there any connection between Lost and Cloverfield?"
Goddard: "Maybe."
He just shat on a lot of us.
