I guess my rehab team isn't running an effective intervention... My name is pancito and I haven't had a pastry in ........ two hours.

The reason your avatar isn't there is that you ditched the cool foils (epees?) for the FTLR avatar which 1. isn't personal, and 2. doesn't manipulate well (it's actually two images overlayed and wants to split apart when I do something with it.) You are well represented by pastries, however.

ETA: The forums are back up at DLI, mostly for the benefit of 48HIP...

Here's a little something to occupy the time right now:

Hate to break it to ya, but we've already solved it. Partly.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Solution is PELCG, rots to "CRYPT".

#1: Year that Walt Disney's Fantasia was Released (D 1940)
#2: Miles in a Marathon (E 26)
#3: Y the Bs R RS C 1965 (C elimination, only other year)
#4: T in a "D-N" S of D (B elimination, only one left)
#5: Teams in the National League of Baseball (A 16)

We still have to do something with the solution, though...

If you take the letters and string them out, you get:

qdltg iemcb oglin pxpdf ktmxx

And I know what the answer is, because Vigenére almost works, and because
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
it's on the front of the card

But I can't quite figure out the encoding method and don't have time right now.

I'm wondering if it could possibly be using a Playfair Cipher due to the box configuration and the double xx. But I'm also too tired to figure it out right now. And I might be going in a completely wrong direction.

It was Vigenere with a mistranscription. "Omne ignotum pro magnifico." Toasty actually figured out HOW it went wrong, so kudos to him. (Hey, who would YOU ask?) History.

OK, cat's out of the bag and OFL (do I have to refer to him that way?Wink) will correct the small error, so here is the solution (working backwards mind you from pancito's translation of the front of the card):
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
If you rotate each column so that the key letters are all in a row, either at the top or bottom, you get something like this:

QBIXLK
DINPXT
LEODYM
TMGFC*
GCLPE*

Getting rid of the key and reading the columns off gets you
QDLT BIEM INOG XPDF LXYC KTM

Using Vigenere with CRYPT as the key gives
OMNE IGNO TUMP ZAKD UZJJ ICO
which is obviously wrong.

But if there was an error in the setup, and the first two characters in columns 4 and 5 were swapped?

QIOCPK
DEGEXT
LMLPLM
TCIDX*
GBNFY*

Update the clue numbering/lettering to match and get this
QBIPXK
DINDLT
LEOFXM
TMGCY*
GCLPE*

QDLT BIEM INOG PDFC XLXY KTM

Vigenere with CRYPT then gives
OMNE IGNO TUMP ROMA GNIF ICO

OMNE IGNOTUM PRO MAGNIFICO (which is what Pancito found on the front of the card).

Oh, and I think 3 might be
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Year the Beatles Released Rubber Soul

Great job both of you! Very Happy

I never played LgL so that never would've occurred to me.

This really goes here...

I know this should go in the 'More Time Off' thread, or even timewasters, but sometimes you just want to go back home. Or something. Anyway, Just dropping in to say "Hang in there, it'll be back." And in honor of my 1001th post (if you don't count agent999 etc., and I don't) I come bearing gift. Probably not as cool as Toasty's userbars, or even ALISDAIRPARK's "I can't believe this is the post that makes me an unfictologist…" But.

Have fun. Amaze your friends. Get swag.

Oh, no fancy java or anything, so bookmark wherever you get to...
