Just for the record, it looks like the star is *before* the number if it dosen't take incoming calls (almost all of them seem to have ones after).

For example:

Quote:
Russellville
270-725-9189...Ninth Street Shell Food Mart..491 W 9th St*

Shelbyville
*502-633-9128..Arby's Rest...................810 Taylorsville Rd*

The Russellville phone takes calls, while the Shelbyville one does not.

You mean, like this one?

Why shouldn't I just post whatever I want on the first thread I see? (or why do I keep getting told I'm posting in the wrong place?)

The key to being an effective team is to stay organized. No one wants to waste their time on a puzzle that has already been solved in another thread. Nor does anyone want to read about the same update 23 times in different threads. By keeping the discussions focused we can be a more effective team and we can have more fun!

We now have two concurrent threads devoted exclusively to discussing the whole pay phone issue, this one and this one. People are frantically posting in both threads. It's probably already too late to pick one and lock the other, but [whine]this is exactly the kind of thing the Posting Guidelines are supposed to prevent[/whine].

So that this post shouldn't be a total waste: According to the explanation here, "A * in front of the telephone number means that the phone does not accept incoming calls." It doesn't say what a * at the end of the line means, though.

Edit: Geez. I can't believe that, in the time it took me to write this post, it already became double-trout. I suck. (Or should I say "I love puppies and flowers"?)

This seals it for me. Both the current locations and some of the old ones from the first list match up exactly with phones listed on this site. Great find. Guess I better bring a tape recorder...?

This is moving to be my new favorite theory.

Basically it seems we have three camps.

Broadcast camp. Which this, the radio theory, etc. would belong in. Theory is that these coordinates are markers for where Melissa is going to be sending a non-physical message.

Puzzle camp. That these locations, either by their numerical or geographical value form a puzzle that can be solved.

Physical camp. Something will be left, picked up or delivered at these locations.

The physical camp doesn't define why these coords have such oddly sorted times. If something was left, the day would be sufficient time. Delivered or picked up doesn't require unique times or intervals.

Puzzle camp, by itself, wouldn't really even require a date and certainly not a time (unless the time was a factoid and not an actual time, etc). Plus, I haven't seen a SOLVED yet Wink

Broadcast camp has been missing one big thing - the medium or frequency. You can't tell what to turn your radio to if you don't know the channel.

So the answer might be a bit of all three. Go to a place, pick up a phone, hear a message. Now the evidence for the puzzle is probably complete. The intervals make sense (PMs need time to place calls), as does the wandering time frame, etc.

Problem is - do all these sites have pay phones? Most? I swear I saw a couple in residential hoods. Side of highways. That kind of thing. Someone else tried calling a pay phone and it did work,so some are still around taking incoming calls.

Another guess to the pile though. If something is left at, broadcasted to or delivered to these coords - it will be the same thing. I don't think we have the manpower to cover everything and I don't think the PMs would risk it.

"Those coordinates... and now the times that go with them... they're beckoning to some of you, aren't they?"

Hmm, Dana. Would you say they're calling to us? Har de har.

"You guys are the ones on the frontlines. So it's your call."

Oh, right. I guess you would.

(EDIT:) Preemptively trouting myself, from the other payphone thread.

Unless you want to keep some wandering passerby from interfering with the item, as would most likely happen at a high traffic coordinate.

Shad0, I believe a * at the end is a clicky (I believe) that tells you who submitted the info on the phone.

However, I just don't buy this phone directory. I man, it's obviously real and all, I'm just saying it's relying on people's submissions of where phones are. It's not necessarily the gospel according to Ma Bell here... I still hold to the payphone idea, and I think not seeing a phone listed here is not a disqualification of that theory. (For example I was there at the Bensenville, IL location. There IS a payphone there. It's not listed on the payphone directory, however.) I expect that phone to ring. I won't be disappointed if it's something else, of course, cuz anything is cool. But I just see WAY too much faith in this list being the know-it-all as far as payphones go...

Ok, that helps me out a lot. Looks like I'm going to a Cracker Barrel in Macon, GA (or the adjacent Hampton Inn). What was really messing me up here was that Mapquest & Yahoo Maps kept telling me that those were about a mile away, on the other side of the interstate. But going to Cracker Barrel & Hampton Inn's websites confirm that they are where acme & the phone list say they are.
Cool! Very Happy

(I had narrowed it down to a restaurant across the street...and even called them to ask what was across the street from them....and the guy gave me wrong info.)

I don't know which thread to post in anymore!

So I will here.

I think all three Chicago Locations have pay phones. Someone else will have to verify Addison/Bensenville. I haven't looked at these visually, but I used to live in Wrigleyville.

312-280-9844...Chicago Sun-Times.............401 N Wabash Ave...outside*

*773-404-6879..Borders Book Store............2817 N Clark St*
773-404-6903...Borders Book Store............2817 N Clark St*

The Sun-Times is one coord. The Century and the Borders are across the street from each on Clark.

This is my new favorite theory, I think. Not nearly 100% on it though.

I belive that I can make the Davis, CA location. It is uncorrected in the Phil I downloaded this morning. On the Trynomics site it is:

13:17 PDT - -121.743038,38.543151 | Davis, California, United States

I belived that I have missed something. Is it Tues., Aug. 24 (after "Wide awake and physical) at the listed time that everyone thinks we are supposed to be there? That is if this is the purpose.javascript:emoticon('Confused')

It is a real pain not being able to get to the Wiki!

Thanks for the Phil Dorkmaster!

Yes, Tuesday is the date we are expecting the "axons" to "go hot." I miss Davis -- what's at that location again?

(Incidentally, Dorkmaster, you're absolutely right about the ending * on the phone list. )

Well, all three sites in Chicago proper seem to have pay phones, by these sites.

Considering the size of Chicago, there really aren't a lot of payphones. Tons on Navy Pier and Grant Park, rest scattered around the city.

So not only is this a big coincidence - it's the only theory I can think of as to how there could be two locations across the street from each other. As the ones on Clark street are. It makes no sense for the radio theory. Seems highly odd for leaving something physical, or having someone be there (inefficient if nothing else). But if it's just phones, then the PMs can just be a little lazy about it.

And as another meta point - what was that old sci fi story about a network which become suddenly self-aware? What was it's wake up cry? A phone call.

Bensenville DOES have a payphone although it's not on the list... Only know cuz I went there before... Anyway, I just wanted people to not be discouraged if their coordinate doesn't have a phone on the payphone search thingy... Like I said, mine wasn't on the list, but there is DEFINITELY a phone there...

FWIW, I knew about both threads when I edited the topics on each while they were still separate. They started out with different, though similar, subjects (spec vs. info) but both eventually devolved into the same topic, hence the merge.
