There's a fairly decent wav processor included in Exact Audio Copy (can handle long files, some basic editing stuff, can encode mp3), and teh folks around here have mentioned Audacity as well (it's open source). Both can be found in google.

I am totally not a lawyer, but did you ask his permission to record and/or possibly use the recorded material in transcript or broadcast form? You might want to hold off on distributing any form of your recording ... I have a gut feeling that it's a no-no.

I also spoke with Daniel this evening. He seemed to think the whole idea was really interesting, and we chatted a lot about the payphones and touched on the community aspect (he was asking about me being a moderator here) ... so we'll see! He said Monday or Tuesday he'd have the story up.

Last year I learned, while serving jury duity, that in Colorado its legal to record a phone converstation and play it back to anyone, as long as at least one person involved in the conversation knew they were being taped. I dont know what it is like in other states though.

Some states require BOTH parties to consent to a recording. Don';t know which; don't know which state's law would govern a convo between weephun and a reporter. But as long as he doesn't publish the recording he should be OK. If the reporter didn't ask him to keep the convo off the record he can certainly tell us all about it....

Well, think of it this way. If he's going to publish the interview, what's the difference with listening to the same interview in sound?

Not the point. Recording a call comes under the wiretapping laws and in some states it requires consent of both parties or a warrant.
