[PHONE] interview with wired.com reporter OK, so I got this email today:
Quote:
Hello, there...
This is Daniel Terdiman writing. I'm a reporter with Wired News
(www.wired.com).
I'm doing a story about I Love Bees, and I was given your email address by
the designers. I wonder if it would be possible to speak with you about the
project?
I'm sure you're busy, but if you had any time to speak with me today
(Thursday) or first thing tomorrow, that would be great, as I'm planning to
file my story on Friday afternoon.
Thanks very much. I look forward to the opportunity to speak with you.
Daniel Terdiman

I arranged for him to call me this evening and just got off the phone with him after talking for about 1/2 hour. He said his story will probably go up Monday. I did record the call and will post it after the story goes up. (Does anybody know of free software that will record something of this length? ... and remove the really bad high pitch whining that somehow got recorded also?)
Couple of quick highlights:
-He had spoken directly with the Puppet Masters. Through a convoluted system of emails then calling a conference line he spoke with 2 guys. And from what they knew, (specifically my Pizza Hut story) we are definitely being watched here.
-He's only been following the ARG for about 24hrs now, so I tried to get him up to speed as quickly as possible. He seemed intelligent, so I hope he'll be able to get up on the story quickly.
I really hope that I came off decently. I guess I'll just have to wait until Monday to find out.

That is pretty cool weephun. At this point, I don't think there is anyone who has experienced this game in as many angles as you have.

I need my foil hat... needs it... =P
Congrats on the interview! Hope this gets a bit of good press out about ARGs, and not more of that 'viral-marketing' shiiii---- stuff.
My first response when I read the title though, keeping in theme:
Daaaaaaaaaaamn!

There's a fairly decent wav processor included in Exact Audio Copy (can handle long files, some basic editing stuff, can encode mp3), and teh folks around here have mentioned Audacity as well (it's open source). Both can be found in google.

Yeah, I got the email too, but by the time I could get back to him he'd talked to enough people.

I am totally not a lawyer, but did you ask his permission to record and/or possibly use the recorded material in transcript or broadcast form? You might want to hold off on distributing any form of your recording ... I have a gut feeling that it's a no-no.
I also spoke with Daniel this evening. He seemed to think the whole idea was really interesting, and we chatted a lot about the payphones and touched on the community aspect (he was asking about me being a moderator here) ... so we'll see! He said Monday or Tuesday he'd have the story up.

Last year I learned, while serving jury duity, that in Colorado its legal to record a phone converstation and play it back to anyone, as long as at least one person involved in the conversation knew they were being taped. I dont know what it is like in other states though.

Some states require BOTH parties to consent to a recording. Don';t know which; don't know which state's law would govern a convo between weephun and a reporter. But as long as he doesn't publish the recording he should be OK. If the reporter didn't ask him to keep the convo off the record he can certainly tell us all about it....

Well, think of it this way. If he's going to publish the interview, what's the difference with listening to the same interview in sound?

Not the point. Recording a call comes under the wiretapping laws and in some states it requires consent of both parties or a warrant.

Well, why wouldn't the guy give consent? He's publishing the interview. It's pretty much the same thing

Quote:
Idaho Code § 18-6702: Although legislation criminalizes the interception and disclosure of wire or oral communications, it specifically allows interception when one of the parties has given prior consent . Punishment for the felony of an illegal interception or disclosure can include up to five years in prison and as much as $5,000 in fines. Anyone whose communications are unlawfully intercepted can sue for recovery of actual damages, $100 a day per day of violation or $1,000 — whichever is more. Punitive damages, litigation costs and attorney fees also can be recovered. Idaho Code § 18-6709. (Emphasis Phaedra's)
No need to worry, weephun. In most states it is legal providing that one of the parties has consented; some states include a provision disallowing recording if the intent can be proven to be criminal or tortious. But I don't think that what you did qualifies as either.
