And there are a few of Neil Gaiman's works on the reading list at the library.

It might pay to see if we can match up any more of that list with other things that appear in dreams.

for those who want to know, her email is webmistressSPLATsixthofnever.com.

She seems to be going through what dale is going through.

There are also sketches of the masks on her website.

Edit: Attached Pics of masks...

Speaking of the pictures of the masks. We haven't really discussed them much.

the one titled "History" seems to portray various modes of how stories are passed from person to person - the written tradition (the scroll on the right side), the oral tradition (the tongue sticking out), the Stars on the left, as the keepers of myths (most cultures designated constellations in honor of various heros, spirits or gods).

The other titled "Knowledge" seems to have a Tree covering most of the face, the leaves as the crown, the roots across the lower face connecting the tree to a book.

The "Tree of Knowledge" aka source of the original sin of Adam & Eve?

Books are the source (root) of all knowlage, but you can never stop learning (growing) I see a leaf-brain connection as well, leaves help a tree grow much like our brains help us to grow and prosper.

My $0.02

Has anyone cleaned up the text on the masks yet?

What I can make out of the History Mask:

The pillars are titled "Crown of ................" (I thought I had the word - but can't figure it out now. It could be "architecture.")

There are indications on it as to what media Sarah planned to use. An example is the sword over the one eye. "metal" points to the blade of the sword and "paint" points to the hilt.

The scroll coming down the face is labeled "the written tradition." The mouth is labeled "the oral tradition."

On the other side of the face there's a notation "free hanging" and then something about "crystals." I think these are Sarah's notes on how she was going to handle the design. I can't make out what it says about the symbols over that eye or what is said in the rest of the info on the "crystals."

For the Knowledge mask I can make out that she's indicating the headdress is made of "famous quotations" and I think "many languages."

The images over the eyes are identified as "lanterns of ........." Under that appears to be design notations "colorfast .............." More design notes seem to be "protruding .......... to frontal .........."

On the other side of the page the text pointing to the headdress is "leaves ----- treated ................ starched papers."

The only word I can make out from the words pointing to the eyes is "yellow" and the very small note under that is unreadable (atleast for me.)

After a bit of colour adjustment some words are easier to read. What you said was Metal, in fact says Model, so I think its more an indication of what she needs to do, rather than use.

That makes sense that it was "model" since she was sculpting them. I think the important thing is there's not a lot of clues - atleast not ones that are evident at this time.

a few more mask notations

I asked Sarah about those notations in this email posted in the interaction section. (btw-Yay, a full fledged forum section for Chasing the Wish! Nice work mods!)
Here; in bold for easy reading, are the ones she mentioned:
Quote:
Let me see - there's nothing really earth-shattering there; mainly just little notes about what I planned to put where, and what media to use. For example, one sketch says things like, "Famous quotes in many languages" and "Leaves -fimo-treated canvas? Starched paper?" The other says "Crown of architecture"and "The stars - constellations are where we keep our myths," and so on. Mainly just little notes to myself to work with as I created the items.

"one sketch says things like" refers to 'Knowledge'. "The other says"is about 'History'.

edit (not to double post):
I've emailed Sarah about the literary references found in 'Variety is the spice of dead librarians'. I asked for her IM nick, and permission to share it with the better minds than mine that first recognized them; if she'd like to discuss it further.

Sarah's reply to that email can be found here
Part of what Sarah wrote....
Quote:
Asking someone to burn me up - why, that's The Cremation of Sam McGee, of
course, one of my favorite poems. You haven't lived until you've heard
someone
reciting Robert Service.

The governess with the monster in the attic - I think it's more likely that's
Jane Eyre, which I always preferred to The Turn of the Screw.

The boy who smelled like a swimming hole had to have been Tom Sawyer, who drew
that dreadful picture for Becky Thatcher. A lady to her core, she didn't
criticize his artwork, but rather praised his efforts. If only art critics
could learn a lesson from her.

Anyway, I've no idea what made me put that particular diverse cast of
characters
together in my head that night!

So, if there is a puzzle in this dream, perhaps it's hidden in the list of characters from the books.
For those interested, here is the poem by Robert W. Service: The Cremation of Sam McGee, though I'm sure the burning up in her car has little to do with this poem.
As an aside, I found a fabulous reading of the poem online, but I'm waiting to hear back from the site owner before posting it.

[update] can't find a happy place June 17

Quote:
Can't find a happy place 17Jun06 | Comments Off
It is so common now that it would be only notable through its absence. Last night I had the burning dream again, although there was more to it this time:

I was in the car, cool and hot air intertwining upon my skin so that I couldn't figure out whether I was cold or warm. A glance in the mirror; I am on fire. But then my face changed into the faces of the masks, in some sort of ghoulish parade.

Knowledge appeared, and spoke to me. "You have embraced some tenets of knowledge and discarded others; in this way you are not whole." It burst into flames and melted before my eyes. I felt my own face burn with it. History was behind it. "You have chased after history for so long that you are not sure whether you are running towards it or away from it."

I felt a chill dread down my spine as I shot my eyes quickly over to the passenger seat. My stepfather was there, with that vast evil grin of his peeking out of decaying flesh. His eyes were not just steely, but they looked to be of steel, cold and without life. I shuddered and willed him away, staring back into the mirror, crying out as the face there oozed away and turned into another.

Nature spoke. "Do you know, anymore, what is natural and what is not? For you have forgotten the feel of the wind even as you surround yourself with dead trees." As it caught fire and melted away, I screamed with the aching of it. Technology piped up. "You have forsaken me and embraced me; I am your bastard child who knows not if he is loved or hated." A flash; gone but for the painful singe on my skin.

Sacred's voice filled the car with its booming. "You do not know anymore what you worship, child. Without spiritual focus you are incomplete." Another burst of flame and intense agony. Man spoke: "I am of you and not of you; you are me and not me; we shall never be together as long as we are apart."

Rather than catch fire, the face broke apart into thousands of glittering glassy shards, and behind it was my face again, nearly blackened from flame, tears carving a steamy trail down the ruined landscape of my cheeks. My dying act was to turn to look at Hamilton again, who was laughing and pointing at me, staring with those alien eyes. "Why, girlie girl, you know less about yourself than I do! Now isn't that a surprise?" With a savage grin, he reached out to shove me…

I awoke as I fell out of bed.

Wow, I just emailed her this morning about the masks from Dale's dream and the names he used - how I felt they were both connected.
So she changed Progress to Technology, and verified that the last one is Man. Sweet.

We speculated in chat who might be associated with each of Sarah's masks.

Sarah - Knowledge - being the library
Wes - History - He wrote a book about the area
Sam - Technology - She's the computer geek
Iris - Nature - She's very connected to the land, even though she identifies her shop as "unnatural."
Sacred - Digitalis - He is the one most connected to the other side.
Man/Self-Realization - Dale - He's the one who needs to find out who he is.

It was speculated that Don could be the one associated with "Progress" but I think there's two things that go against that. One is that he's not one of the "good guys" and while Dale referred to it as "Progress" Sarah called the mask "Technology."

Added: I think this page pretty much proves that Iris is "Nature:"

[Spec] matching masks to archetype personae

Just to further support Sarah as the archetype for knowledge; Dale's June 7th journal entry about his dream with tombstones reads:
Quote:
Sarah Wyatt,<snip>.....Beneath her name was the inscription "Here lies knowledge the world shall never know."

History may be Wes' son (pursuing his father's history via book to video) , Peter from Mysterytown (a history hunter), or Phyllis Willingham
from Phyllis' about page:
Quote:
We at the Hollow Needle hold to a higher standard of product; it's not about the value, it's about the history. Every piece we carry has it's own history; it's own story to tell.

Good idea on it being Phyllis who is history. He quote certainly fits.
